Embracing the Journey: Lessons from a Champion Coach

Embracing the Journey: Lessons from a Champion Coach

April 28, 20253 min read

Recently, I had the honor of being a guest expert on a podcast, where I shared my journey as a coach, the challenges I faced, and the lessons that shaped my philosophy on success and leadership. It was a chance to reflect on years of perseverance, breakthroughs, and what it truly means to be a champion.

A Decade of Determination

For years, my teams reached the national championship semifinals, only to fall short of the title. Colleagues would joke that I must be a masochist for enduring the pressure and heartbreak. But for me, being in the "hot kitchen"—coaching on the biggest stage while others watched—was a privilege. I’d rather have the chance to swing at the plate than sit in the stands. That mindset kept me going, year after year, until 2013, when we finally broke through, winning our first NCAA national title at Virginia. That victory was followed by three more championships in the next four years, a testament to persistence and grit.

What Makes a Champion?

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that being a champion isn’t just about winning. It’s about showing up, day after day, and giving everything you have. I’ve always told my players that a champion maximizes every resource—humility, love, character, faith—and strives to be the best version of themselves. They’re not afraid to be seen putting in full effort or to risk failure on the biggest stages.

“A champion isn’t someone who necessarily wins the most. A champion is someone who’s not afraid to take advantage of every single resource they have... and they’re willing to put themselves on the line, time and time again.”

Some of the greatest coaches in the world have never won a championship, yet their impact is undeniable. Titles don’t define you—your willingness to grow, face adversity, and lead with integrity does.

Navigating the Adversity of Success

Success brings its own challenges. When you start winning, people may tell you what you want to hear instead of what you need to hear. That’s why I’ve always surrounded myself with people who keep my ego in check and push me to improve. Even now, as I lead USA Player Development, I’m still working to be the best coach and person I can be.
